Firmware Xerox AltaLink C8055
Firmware is software stored in read-only storage that cannot be changed when not powered by electricity. Firmware consists of computer programs that provide low-level control of a piece of hardware. That is, this firmware is like embedded in each hardware unit, such as electronic devices and components on a computer.
A piece of hardware may retain its components even if the firmware is changed. If likened to, the firmware is similar to the operating system on a computer.
Computers without an operating system cannot perform their functions properly, users cannot provide input commands that the computer can process.
So is the case with the firmware. Without the firmware in the hardware, a hardware device cannot receive commands to be executed. However, there are differences between firmware and software which will be discussed in the next point. Initially, firmware only had read-only memory (ROM), and read-only programmable memory (PROM).
This type of firmware is designed to work permanently, cannot be updated when there is a certain update. Later, the PROM chip developed and the program in it could be updated, which was then called EPROM (Erasable Programmable ROM). Even so, EPROM is quite expensive, takes a lot of time to update, and its use is not practical. After that, the firmware developed again with flash memory, which is easier to use and easier to update.
